Delete Your Account

Last updated: May 2026

We respect your right to control your personal data. You can delete your GenSmart account at any time, in line with the GDPR Article 17 right to erasure and Cameroon Law 2024/017 of 23 December 2024 on personal data protection. This page explains the process and what happens to your data.

How to Delete Your Account

Option 1: From the App (Recommended)

  1. Open the GenSmart app and log in to your account
  2. Go to Profile (tap your avatar or the profile icon)
  3. Scroll down to Account Settings
  4. Tap "Delete Account"
  5. Confirm your decision in the dialog that appears
  6. Your account will be permanently deleted

Option 2: By Email

If you cannot access the app, send an email to privacy@gensmart.io with the subject line "Delete My Account". Include the email address associated with your GenSmart account. We will process your request within 7 business days.

What Gets Deleted

When you delete your account, the following data is permanently removed:

  • Your profile — Name, email, phone number, avatar, and all personal information
  • Authentication credentials — Your user record is removed from our identity service, all active sessions are signed out, and refresh tokens are invalidated immediately
  • Federated identity records — If you signed in with Google (or, in the future, Apple), the underlying federated-identity record is also removed so the same provider account can be used for a fresh sign-up later
  • Course progress — All lesson completion records and quiz scores
  • Certificates — All certificate records and PDF files are permanently deleted
  • Wishlist & cart — All saved courses and cart items
  • Notifications — All notification history
  • Offline cache — All encrypted offline content on your device
  • Learning analytics — Study time, streak data, and performance metrics
  • S3-stored files — Avatar image, certificate PDFs, and any other personal files

What May Be Retained

Certain data may be retained for legal, financial, or operational reasons:

  • Payment records — Transaction history is retained for 7 years as required by OHADA accounting law. Your name, email, and payment-method details are anonymised; only the financial figures and timestamps remain for tax/audit reconciliation.
  • Enrollment records — Anonymised enrollment rows are retained for teacher-earnings calculation and refund reconciliation. Your name and email are removed.
  • Teacher earnings & scheduled payouts — If you are a teacher, your earnings and payout rows are anonymised but retained for 7 years as required by OHADA accounting law. Your name and email are removed; a verified MTN MoMo payout number may be retained only while needed to complete outstanding scheduled payouts.
  • Content you created — If you are a teacher with published courses, those courses are archived (no new enrolments, but existing students keep access). Your name appears as "Anonymous" to learners and the public storefront. GenSmart admins retain access to your name on those courses for the compliance window required by Cameroon Law 2024/017 Art 22 and OHADA accounting law (7 years for financial records). Your bio and avatar are removed immediately. You can request full course removal by emailing teachers@gensmart.io before deleting your account.
  • Content reports — Reports you submitted about other content are retained to maintain platform safety but are anonymised (your identity removed).
  • Deletion audit record — A minimal record (timestamp, status, legal basis) is retained to demonstrate compliance with your erasure request, per GDPR Article 30 records of processing.

This Action Is Permanent

  • Account deletion cannot be undone
  • You will lose access to all enrolled courses
  • Your certificates will be permanently deleted
  • If you are a teacher with outstanding earnings, deletion is blocked until a verified MTN MoMo payout phone is on your earnings record. After that, your earnings are paid on the next scheduled pay date (1st or 15th of the month).
  • If you have a payout currently processing (mid-MTN-transfer), deletion is briefly blocked until that transfer completes (typically minutes). Other payout states do not block deletion.
  • You will need to create a new account if you wish to use GenSmart again

For Teachers

Teachers receive earnings on a scheduled basis, not on demand. Here is what happens when you delete your account:

  • Outstanding earnings are paid out automatically on the next 1st or 15th of the month via MTN MoMo, sent to the number on your TeacherEarning record. You do not need to do anything — but please verify the MoMo number on your earnings page is correct before deleting your account; we cannot contact you afterwards to fix it.
  • Deletion is briefly blocked only if your account has a payout currently processing through MTN (typically resolves within minutes), or if unpaid teacher earnings exist without a verified MTN MoMo payout phone.
  • Enrolled students are notified automatically — every learner enrolled in your published courses receives a courtesy email letting them know the course has been archived (with the reassurance that their existing access is preserved). You do not need to message them yourself.

Optional but recommended:

  1. Notify your students personally — A direct message from you can be more meaningful than the automatic notification
  2. Request course removal — Email teachers@gensmart.io if you want your courses fully removed rather than archived under the "Anonymous" instructor display

Deletion Timeline

1

Within seconds

Your account is deactivated, you are signed out from every device, and personal data is removed from all active systems (profile, certificates, progress, notifications, cart, wishlist, federated identity records).

2

Within 35 days

Continuous DynamoDB backups (point-in-time recovery snapshots) age out per AWS's standard 35-day retention window — the last trace of your data in any backup is gone.

3

7-year retention (anonymised only)

Anonymised financial records (payments, enrollments, teacher earnings, scheduled payout records) are retained for 7 years per OHADA accounting law — your name, email, and payment-method details are removed when no longer needed for payout completion, but the figures and timestamps remain for audit and tax reconciliation.

Erasure SLA

Per GDPR Article 12(3), we process erasure requests within 30 days of receipt. If your deletion is blocked by a financial reconciliation requirement (outstanding earnings or an in-flight scheduled payout), Article 12(3) permits a documented extension to up to 3 months while the disbursement completes — we will keep you informed and complete the deletion as soon as the blocker is resolved.
